Custom Kits

After many years of research and analysis into the origin of small traditional craft throughout the world and their different construction methods, I have distilled what it is that made them so. I could then focus on perfecting the technology to pull them forward. I can now offer rapid and accurate digitization of any boat.

Using my own blend of specially developed algorithmic software that with my CAD(Rhinoceros 3D)  software, enables me to produce classically defined and traditionally respectful kits for any design.

This translates into a number of things;

  • "Magic Witchcraft" for which I hope not to be burnt alive for.
  • Accurate and precise components, only for those who  want a symmetrical boat.
  • Massive decrease in construction time, meaning you can start another project sooner!
  • The ability to be the gifted craftsman and build the most complicated projects without the lifetime of experience.
  • Decrease in materials consumed due to clever magic in optimization.
  • No power tools required, everything is pre-cut. You may however want to get an electric sander, unless you really enjoy hand sanding...

Now all this magic may sound fantastically exciting and it is! However there is only so much magic to go around, meaning you will still need to shape timber, push things into place and glue stuff together! You will also need to make very important decisions such as; "What color will it be?", "Will I use dark timber or light timber?", "How will I convince my wife she need a boat as well?" and "What to wear while I am being the uber craftsman?".

The Rebirth of Tradition

So what is the process in developing a new kit? Firstly you will need to either pick a particular boat or a style of boat. Then the creative juices begin to flow and we will discuss what the projects requirements are and what if any, are the projects limitations. A hull is then created on the computer and is faired, once faired the build is fleshed out in its entirety. By building every component on the computer first, all possible conflicts can be resolved before they even occur. Nothing worse than having something "Half Fitting" or "Close" because that only means it does not fit which defeats the purpose of having anything planned at all.

Once the hull is built up the finer details can be picked out and finalised. A bit of color can even be splashed about. The boat is then deconstructed and depending on the construction style, a build system is created. If a build system is required these are designed to be reusable.

Currently I specialize in glued lapstrake / clinker (<-Click to find out what it is) construction. I can guaranteed consistent plank landing widths for the length of the boat, as well as consistently fair planking lines that are beautiful to the eye and soothing to the soul. The build system I have painstakingly created for these designs have individually calculated plank steps that are used to define the position of each plank and are also used as guides to assist with the beveling of the previous plank's edge.

Glued lapstrake designs are by far the most beautiful and the most complicated projects to digitise correctly, thats if you can do it at all. Having successfully mastered this style of construction and built the algorithms to do the hard work for me, it leaves all other designs to be devoid of challenge.

What is this magical "Kit"?

This "Kit" comprises of the primary components you will require to build your project which arrive safely flatpacked. There are several levels of detail available, this will also change based on the style of construction you choose.

Level 1 : Base Component Pack (BCP)

  • Stations/molds with individually calculated plank steps.
  • Planking with allowance for self scarfing.
  • Transom and/or stems templates.
  • If sailing version; plywood blanks for centerboard case, centerboard, rudder blade.

Level 2: Primary Component Pack (PCP)

  • Stations/molds with individually calculated plank steps.
  • Planking with self aligning "hidden puzzle joints".
  • Planking has numbers engraved on ends to define which plank it is.
  • Transom and/or stems templates.
  • If sailing version; plywood blanks for centerboard case, centerboard, rudder blade.

Level 3: Complete Component Pack (CCP)

  • Reusable self aligning slot together build system incorporating all stations/molds.
  • Planking with self aligning "hidden puzzle joints".
  • Planking has numbers engraved on ends to define which plank+side of boat it is.
  • Templates for all timber components(floors, stem, transom, skeg, rudder stock, deck beams, breasthook and so on...).
  • Enough cut layers of templates (stem, apron etc..) to build the actual laminating jigs.
  • If sailing version; plywood blanks for centerboard case, centerboard, rudder blade.

A custom service with as much or as little detail as you desire.
